How to Set Aspirations for the New Year

Welcome to 2O20!! I am so excited to start out this new year and can’t wait to see what all will happen this year. Have you set your 2020 goals and aspirations yet? It’s not too late to get those lists started.

Today I wanted to share a bit about how I go about targeting my goals and aspirations at the beginning of a new year. The first things to know about me, is that I HATE making New Year resolutions. Why? Because more times than not, these resolutions are not followed through after the first 30 days of the new year.

INSTEAD

I like to set yearly goals and aspirations. I then break them down even further by setting small habits and goals to accomplish each month. This way, by the end of the month I have built habits that support my overall yearly goals.

How To Set Your Aspirations?

Choose one aspiration you would love to see completed in each area of your life ( For example; Health, Career, Financial, Family). Depending on how many areas you decide to set an aspiration in, will decide how many tasks you will be working on monthly.

After you have your yearly aspirations set, look at the year as a roadmap. Determine how to break down these aspirations into smaller chunks that can be worked on monthly. This gives you small stepping stones to digest your aspirations. These smaller chunks will be your monthly goals.

Now that you have created the smaller chunks, you need to determine which ones you are wanting to complete each month of the year. Obviously, some things need to go in a certain order so don’t overthink it. If there are any chunks that you can and want to move around, go ahead. This is where you really get to personalize how each month will be throughout the year. You get the chance to put out in the universe what you are willing to work on each month.

It is vitally important to reevaluate yourself every three months in order to determine if you are on track with your yearly aspirations. Has something changed? Do you need to alter your aspiration due to a life circumstance? This is the time to make those decisions so you can continuously work toward an end goal. It is perfectly okay if you need to realign the monthly goals you are working toward. Is one of your goals not working for you? Or has something (you can’t change) standing in your way? This is an important time to know when to call these things out and make changes.

Summary of Setting Aspirations
  1. Set 1 yearly aspiration for each area of your life.
  2. Break down each aspiration into goals / habits to smaller chunks.
  3. List out what you need to be working on each month in order to complete the aspirations at the end of the year.
  4. Reevaluate yourself every 3 months to determine if you are on track, or if you need to realign.
My Aspirations for 2020

This year I wanted to get in some major progress in two areas of my life: My Health and My Blog. I need to work on being consistent in all areas of my life. I have ups and downs of consistently and I am sick of it. This year, I have broken down these aspirations into small habits I can make each month to lead me to live a more consistent and present life. My habits for January?

  • Drink more water
  • Practice Personal Development
  • Gratitude Journaling
  • Moving my body daily

    I loved how you broke these down into manageable tasks. It seems overwhelming to just say ‘what are my goals for 2020?’ Doing aspirations for each area and then breaking them down so they’re attainable is awesome!

      I love the idea of breaking down aspirations into small goals. I don’t make new year’s resolutions for the same reason you mentioned. This will be helpful.
